I am a PhD Candidate in Economics at IIES, Stockholm University. My research lies at the intersection of economic history, political economy, and economic development. I study how institutions, social interactions, and knowledge diffusion shape long-run development. I build novel datasets by digitizing archival and library collections at scale, and analyze them with applied microeconometric methods.
In 2024/25, I visited the University of Oxford. Prior to starting my PhD, I received an MSc in Econometrics, BSc and MSc degrees in Mathematics, and a BA in Philosophy.

Can broadening the exchange of knowledge raise knowledge production? Historians have long credited coffeehouses, commercial venues where strangers met across social ranks, with fostering scientific activity during the Scientific Revolution. We test this claim in seventeenth-century London. Using geocoded records and a staggered event study across parishes, we find a persistent increase in mathematical practitioners and scientific instrument shops following a parish’s first coffeehouse. Effects are concentrated among practitioners with weak ties to Oxford and Cambridge, connections between theorists and applied makers increase, and new shops turn toward experimental instruments. Across European cities in the seventeenth century, we similarly find that applied mathematics titles and scientific instrument makers rise after a city’s first coffeehouse, relative to cities of similar size and growth. A quantitative urban model calibrated to our parish- and city-level estimates attributes to coffeehouses 31 percent of London’s applied scientists in the half century after the first one opened in 1652. These findings show that social venues can raise knowledge production by broadening the exchange of knowledge beyond formal academic networks.

Learning to Participate:The Effects of the First Female Teachers
How does opening a profession to a previously excluded group shape the next generation? From 1859, Sweden allowed women to teach in elementary schools. We digitize teacher registers and 350,000 signatures from the 1913–14 suffrage petition, linking them to full-count censuses. Exploiting the staggered timing of districts’ first female hire, we show that women exposed to female teachers as schoolgirls were 23 percent more likely to sign the petition and 9 percent more likely to work outside other people’s homes. IV estimates using nearby women’s teacher seminaries suggest early female-hiring districts also had stronger suffrage organizations and more women voting in person.

Wealth Confiscation and Elite Persistence:Evidence from the Great Reduction
This paper studies how far a wealth shock persists across generations and whether it erodes status by examining the largest confiscation in Swedish history: the Great Reduction of 1680, which took half the nobility’s landed wealth. Linking noble genealogies to manor ownership across the Swedish realm, we compare descendants of nobles who lost manors with those of observably similar nobles who did not. Manor ownership falls sharply and stays lower four generations later, by more than mobility correlations predict. Yet careers, marriages, human capital, and demographic outcomes barely move, though they respond strongly to descent from the political elite.

This Swedish-language article is a popular-audience adaptation of an early version of my current working paper, Learning to Participate: The Effects of the First Female Teachers, co-authored with Mattias Folkestad.
This Swedish-language article discusses the women’s suffrage movement in Sweden and its role in challenging the legitimacy of male political power. It emphasizes how suffrage activists built organizations, mobilized networks, and used petitions and public campaigns to make women’s political claims visible before formal enfranchisement.
Weather and Conflicts in Afghanistan

I combine high-resolution data on temperature and precipitation with georeferenced data on conflict events to explore the link between local weather variations and conflict incidence for all districts of Afghanistan between July 2005 and December 2016. By utilizing exogenous interannual variation in daily temperature and precipitation within district-months, I find that exchanging colder for warmer days tends to increase the likelihood of conflict and that precipitation does not drive the occurrence of conflict. I provide suggestive evidence that temperature shocks to opium production do not explain the observed temperature-conflict link.
This Swedish-language review discusses an anthology on economic knowledge and the critique of mainstream economics after the global financial crisis. It evaluates the case for reforming economics, focusing especially on the relationship between mathematical modeling, empirical work, and heterodox approaches.
This dataset contains raw and standardized transcriptions of all signatories to the nationwide Swedish women’s suffrage petition of 1913–14, including names, titles, occupations, and addresses, together with geocoded information. It covers roughly 18,700 petition lists and 350,000 signatures collected by the National Association for Women’s Suffrage in Sweden (Landsföreningen för kvinnans politiska rösträtt) and submitted to parliament in 1914. The signatories represented about 18 percent of Swedish women aged 18 and over at the time. The material was digitized by about 370 collaborators through the citizen-science project I demokratins namn: kvinnorna som krävde rösträtt, hosted on FromThePage, from scanned archival volumes held by the National Archives of Sweden. The resulting data make the signatories searchable and linkable to individual-level historical records, enabling study of women’s political mobilization before suffrage.
This dataset harmonizes the 1930 Dutch East Indies census at the lowest administrative level and links 691 units to a historical boundary layer. It provides population counts by census category, a standardized administrative hierarchy, and stable identifiers for joining the tabular and spatial data.
